A criminal case was initiated against Azat Khasanov and other members of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Kazan in connection with a number of actions using symbols of the banned activism, including pickets and car rallies, which were dedicated to the prohibition of translation of the Koran and persecution of Muslims; shortly before his arrest, he submitted a letter to the administration of Tatarstan about the persecution of Muslims and gave a speech at a mosque about the anti-Islamic policy of the Russian Federation; he was held in a pre-trial detention centre; sentenced to six and a half years' imprisonment in a

He was released in April 2020.
Earlier, Khasanov had been sentenced to four years and seven months in a general regime colony on charges of participation in the activities of a banned organisation and facilitation of terrorist activities; then - to one and a half years in a penal colony on charges of organising the activities of a banned organisation.
