In January 2018, a case of extortion was initiated. On 19 January Valov was taken into custody. Valov claims that after detention he was beaten. Because of the transfer to a special block of the pre-trial detention centre, he went on hunger strike, after which he was sent to a punishment cell. On 19 September, the court began to consider the case. On 26 December, Valov was sentenced to six years of penal colony. Because of the transfer to a special block of the pre-trial detention centre, he went on hunger strike, after which he was sent to a punishment cell. On 19 September, the court began to consider the case. On 26 December, Valov was sentenced to six years of penal colony. On 25 April 2019, the court of appeal returned the case to the court of first instance due to irregularities in the transfer of materials for appeal. After the first-instance court again transferred the materials to the appeal court, the sentence was left unchanged.
In December 2019, it became known that Valov, who is in IK-14 in the Irkutsk region, was sent to a punishment cell due to some "operational necessity".
In June 2022, it became known that Valov was transferred from strict regime to general.
In January 2023, Valov was assigned a two-year administrative supervision after his release.
He was released on 31 March 2023.
