Aleksey Gaskarov is an anti-fascist, anarchist and a member of the Coordination Council of the Opposition. On 3 August 2010, he was arrested in a case on the attack on the building of administration of the city of Khimki outside Moscow on 28 July. On 15 October 2010, the arrest decision was cancelled. On 24 June 2011, he was acquitted by the Khimki City Court.

During the dispersal of the action on Bolotnaya Square on 6 May 2012, Gaskarov was severely beaten, in connection with which he filed a complaint about the riot police exceeding their official powers with the use of violence and special means. On 28 April 2013, he was detained and arrested a day later on charges of leading a group of persons who took an active part in the mass riots that allegedly took place on Bolotnaya Square and of using violence against a representative of the authorities. Later, Gaskarov was accused of using violence against another representative of the authorities: according to the investigation, Gaskarov pulled a certain officer of internal troops by the shoulder, and riot police officer Igor Ibatulin - by the leg. The final version of the charges also states that he took part in the mass riots on Bolotnaya Square. On 18 August 2014, the court sentenced Alexei Gaskarov to three and a half years in a general regime penal colony. On 27 October 2016, he was released from prison.
