Karaulov was put on a wanted list. In March 2023, it became known that another libel case was brought against him - this time because of the statement of film director Nikita Mikhalkov, whom the journalist accused of deforestation in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The two cases were later merged. In April 2023, the Kommersant newspaper reported that a case of illegal business activity had been opened against Karaulov because at least 50 flats in Moscow were registered to him and his relatives, which, according to the investigation, the journalist illegally rented out through third parties. The journalist's lawyer said that the criminal case, "if was initiated, then was initiated against unidentified persons." We do not have sufficient grounds to consider this case political. In June 2023, Karaulov was included in the register of "foreign agents".
