In 2016, Balin's apartment was searched due to a new case of incitement of hatred because of a post on Facebook about the employees of government security agencies. In September 2022, it became known that a criminal case was initated against Balin on the "fake news" about the Armed Forces. On 17 March 2023, Balin was sentenced to seven years in a penal colony. He was taken into custody in the courtroom. On 1 August, Balin told his lawyer that a fellow inmate in the detention centre threatened him with a shiv because he spoke ill of Putin. The conflict turned into a fight twice. According to the lawyer, Balin’s cellmate was reprimanded at the commission, he had already been evicted to another cell.
