It was confirmed that Bugalov was infected with coronavirus. On 10 May 2020, he had high temperature at the hearing where the arrest petition was considered. According to Vladikavkaz activist Indira Gabolayeva, Bugulov lost 10 kilograms in the pre-trial detention centre.
At the trial, a video was shown of a man resembling Bugulov throwing stones at the police. According to Gabolayeva, Bugulov was accused of taking a swing at a policeman who hit him with a rubber stick. In the explanation Bugulov gave to the Centre E, he admitted that at first he tried to calm people who threw stones at the law enforcers who were pushing them, but then he was hit several times, and then, "giving in to a feeling of anger", he also threw a stone. Bugulov did not see where the stone hit.
Bugulov was later reclassified to participation in mass riots. On 26 July 2021, he was sentenced to five years and three months in a penal colony. On 18 October 2022, Court of Cassation reduced the sentence to five years.
Presumably, Bugulov was released in June 2024.
