In April 2024, the journalist published a post about a call from law enforcers: they asked him to give a receipt that he was living abroad. "A voice called Ivan and with the nickname in Telegram "RU YNAO Novy Urengoy Ivan" says, could you write us a handwritten paper that you will no longer return to Russia, you live abroad and everything, then we won't need to put you on the federal wanted list! [...] The trick is that if the obliging officers receive this receipt, they will not need to declare you wanted, they can immediately declare you wanted internationally without much red tape," Bakaleyko said. On 17 May 2024, it became known that the journalist was put on a wanted list in the case of evasion of his duties as a "foreign agent".
