Bulat Gayanov

In January 2010, during a search, Bulat Gayanov, who was in one of the colonies of the Altai Territory, was found to have literature included in the Federal List of Extremist Materials. The investigation allegedly learned from other prisoners that Gayanov encouraged them to become members of Hizb ut-Tahrir. Gayanov was charged with organizing the activities of an extremist organization. On December 13, 2010, he was sentenced to a year and two months in a maximum security colony. In February 2012 he was released.

On January 29, 2009, Gayanov was sentenced to seven and a half years in a maximum security colony on charges of involvement in terrorist activities and creating a criminal community. In total, nine residents of Bashkortostan were sentenced in the case, including Gayanov’s brother and father. The criminal case was also related to involvement in Hizb ut-Tahrir. The charge of involvement in terrorist activities was later dropped
