The action on 6 May 2012 on Bolotnaya Square was the first mass protest event in which Denis Lutskievich took part, before that he had no involvement in political life and public activities. During the arrest he was severely beaten and was treated at the Sklifosovsky Institute. A month later, he was arrested, and riot policeman Alexei Troerin said that Lutskkevich had ripped off his helmet on Bolotnaya Square, an action that was considered a use of violence (later Troerin said that Lutskkevich did not rip off his helmet, but took it away and pulled it). During the interrogations Lutskkevich was threatened, demanded to confess to the use of violence and to testify against persons unknown to him. After Lutskkevich appealed to the head of the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee in Moscow with a statement about the crime of police officers on Bolotnaya, the investigators in the "Bolotnaya case" conduct a line-up with the participation of two "witnesses" - members of the OMON who claim that Lutskkevich "repeatedly threw pieces of asphalt at police officers", although they had not reported anything of the kind before. There is no evidence that Lutskievich tore off his helmet or threw pieces of asphalt. On the video of the events from the square there are shots where Troerin's helmet falls into Lutskevich's hands for a second and a half, but he only stood nearby and did not commit any aggressive actions. On the day of one of the court hearings, Lutskevich was beaten by a convoy. Prosecutors in the debate asked to sentence Lutskevich to five and a half years in a general regime colony. His defence lawyers insist on his complete innocence. On 24 February 2014, the Zamoskvoretsky Court sentenced Lutskkevich to three and a half years' imprisonment in a general regime colony. The Moscow City Court left the judgement unchanged. Lutskevich was denied parole. On 8 December 2015, at the end of his sentence, he was released.
