The Frunzensky District Court placed Dmitrii Tretyakov under arrest on March 16, 2018, on charges of calls for extremism (Part 2 of Article 280 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Two days earlier, law enforcement officers conducted a search of his apartment in the city of Spassk-Dalny and seized electronic equipment. Tretyakov was subsequently transferred to Vladivostok. The grounds for the charges were a repost of a publication from Arkady Babchenko’s Telegram channel to an open chat. Tretyakov did not admit guilt. Individuals present in the courtroom reported that the prosecution had presented no clear evidence and failed to prove that the post had been made from Dmitrii Tretyakov’s account. In June 2017, Tretyakov posted a message in a chat used by local supporters of Navalny. Experts classified the text as “a call-appeal to engage in extremist activity.” According to the expert opinion, the text contained “indications of incitement in the form of a call to violent and destructive actions,” one of which was identified as “protest rallies.” The expert report highlighted several quotations, including: “No fucking agreeing to authorized rallies,” “Bring gas masks,” “Fight with the cops in the streets. Don’t abandon your own. Stay overnight in the streets with bonfires.” On March 28, 2019, Tretyakov was sentenced to 2 years’ suspended imprisonment.
