On the evening of 4 June 2014, Petrin was detained by a group of FSB operatives near Avtozavodskaya metro station and taken to the FSB reception room in Lubyanka, where he was kept all night and, according to him, beaten and threatened with physical violence against him and his relatives, as well as his beloved cat. He claims that the next day he was taken to the investigator's office, where an appointed lawyer and a pre-printed interrogation report were already waiting for him. On the same day Petrin was detained and arrested. He was charged under Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("High Treason").

Two haematomas and a bruise were recorded on Petrin's body when he was admitted to the Lefortovo pre-trial detention centre. Despite the documented signs of beatings, the Ministry of Internal Affairs refused to initiate a criminal case. Petrin also filed a complaint against the appointed lawyer who accompanied him during the first interrogation with the Bar Association.

From the moment of his arrest until his sentencing, Petrin's detention was repeatedly extended by the Lefortovo District Court of Moscow and the Moscow City Court. Petrin's defence counsel at the stage of the investigation signed an undertaking not to disclose the case file and not to disclose information constituting National Security information.

Consideration of the criminal case in court was held in closed mode. It is known that initially Petrin was charged with transferring data on 13 FSB employees, but the court excluded data on 12 employees from the charges and convicted Petrin for transferring data on only one person.

The representative of the state prosecution during the court arguments asked to impose the maximum penalty on Petrin.

On 14 June 2016, a panel of the Moscow City Court chaired by Judge P.V. Melekhin found Evgeny Petrin guilty and sentenced him to 12 years' imprisonment in a strict regime colony. On 4 October 2016, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation left this sentence unchanged.

Petrin retracted the confession given at the first interrogation and does not admit guilt in full.

Petrin has been transferred to a penal colony and his whereabouts are unknown.
