Biography
13th world chess champion. In 2005, he became chairman of the opposition United Civil Front, and in 2008 he became a member of the federal bureau of the Solidarity movement. In 2016, he co-founded the Free Russia Forum. Shortly after the outbreak of the war, he joined the Anti-War Committee of Russia. In May 2022, he was included in the register of "foreign agents". On 6 March 2024, he was added to Rosfinmonitoring's List of Terrorists and Extremists, with a notation indicating that a case had been opened against him under one of the "terrorist" articles. On 24 April 2024, Kasparov was arrested in absentia on charges of organising the activities of a terrorist community, organising terrorist activities and calling for terrorism. On 14 October 2025, the FSB reported the initiation of a case against Kasparov and other members of the Anti-War Committee of Russia for violent seizure of power and organisation of activities of a terrorist community. The reason was the adoption of the "Berlin Declaration" on the need for a change of power in Russia. In December 2025, he was arrested in absentia in the case of public justification of terrorism, details unknown.
