He was detained in connection with a peaceful rally by Greenpeace activists who in September 2013 sailed on the Arctic Sunrise ship to the Prirazlomnaya oil production platform in the Pechora Sea to protest against the development of oil and gas fields on the Arctic shelf; the ship was forcibly stopped and all those on board were detained. He was charged with piracy, and the charge was later reclassified to hooliganism. He was detained from September 2013 and was released on bail in November 2013. He was granted amnesty in December 2013.
