Ivan Baryliak was fighting against the buildings' management company "Comfort-Service", which increased the fees for public utilities. In response to his complaints, he began to receive threats from Komfort-Service employees, including the company's lawyer Dmitry Popov. In February 2014, the electric wires leading to the apartment of Barylyak and his parents were cut. On March 20, 2014, two days after Ivan Barylyak organized a mass filing of applications from residents of the building for overcharging for housing and utility services, three unidentified persons cut the wheels and smashed the body of Barylyak's car with baseball bats. The Stavropol police opened a criminal case under part 2 of article 167 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Intentional destruction or damage to property"), but the perpetrators were not found and brought to justice.

According to Barylyak, Popov, as well as Anatoly Presnyakov and A. Yurin, employees of Komfort-Service, who assisted Popov, attacked him (they later stated that he had attacked them first). After the attack, Barylyak drove his car to a parking lot, where he was attacked again with gunfire (Barylyak identified Presnyakov as the driver of the attackers' car). Following Barylyak's statement about the attack on him on August 14, 2014, the police opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 213 of the Criminal Code ("Hooliganism"). After the attack, Baryliak returned to his house, where he found people whom he recognized as his attackers (including Dmitry Popov), as well as police officers. The attackers, in the presence of police officers, began to take away Barylyak's cell phone (which contained photos of the attackers), beating him in the process. These actions were recorded on video. Having taken away the phone, the attackers fled. On the fact of this attack on Baryliak, as well as his mother, who tried to protect her son, a criminal case was opened under part 2 of article 161 ("Robbery") and part 1 of article 116 ("Beatings") of the Criminal Code, but the perpetrators of the crimes have not been identified and prosecuted. After the attacks, Baryliak was taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a brain concussion, gunshot wounds to his left shoulder and left thigh, and numerous bruises and abrasions. Barylyak was underwent surgery at the hospital and rubber bullets were removed from his body.

On August 14, 2014, a case was opened against Baryliak under Part 1 Article 213 of the Criminal Code ("Hooliganism"), and he was released on personal recognizance. On September 10, after interrogation, Baryliak was detained for 48 hours, and on September 12 he was taken into custody. On December 24, he was placed under the house inprisonment. On January 9, 2015, Barylyak was handed a ruling to bring him as a defendant under part 2 of article 213 ("Hooliganism"), part 2 of article 115 ("Intentional infliction of minor harm to health"), part 2 of article 116 ("Beatings") of the Criminal Code. On August 31, Barylyak was sentenced to three and a half years of imprisonment in a strict regime penal colony.

On March 8, 2018, Barylyak was released. The court imposed administrative supervision on him for a period of 8 years.
