In April 2016, Maxim Smyshlyaev's flat was searched, followed by a confrontation between him and Artur Panov, who was charged in the case of preparing a terrorist attack. Smyshlyaev was arrested. On May 20, he was charged with complicity on the basis of correspondence and personal communication with the minor Panov, who suggested him to commit a terrorist act. Smyshlyaev claims that he dissuaded Panov from carrying out the plot. The investigation believes that Smyshlyaev told Panov how to make a bomb at home. During the investigation, Smyshlyaev's girlfriend Yulia Milova was pressurised, threatened and intimidated. Rosbalt correspondent Dmitry Remizov was demanded to testify against Smyshlyaev. He was also threatened and physical force was used against him.
On August 11 2017, Smyshlyaev was sentenced to ten years in a strict regime colony.
