On 21 February 2012, members of the feminist group Pussy Riot performed a so-called "punk prayer" on the pulpit of Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow. The "prayer" lasted less than a minute and had no musical accompaniment, and the band members were escorted out of the church by security guards. On the same day, a video clip of Pussy Riot's song with the refrain "Mother of God, chase Putin away" with fragments of the incident in the church appeared on the Internet. On 23 December 2013, she was amnestied and released.
In March 2023, it became known that a case of insulting the feelings of believers was brought against Tolokonnikova.
