Moscow City Duma deputy Oleg Sheremetyev was accused of fraud on a large scale (part 4 of article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). According to the investigation, the deputy wrote bonuses to his assistant, while in reality, he took the money for himself. However, according to the deputy, the staff of the office (including the deputy's assistant) could receive bonuses themselves (by writing to the correspondent department), which was used by the assistant. Having found out that his assistant used the scheme without any limitations, the deputy wrote a report to the deputy head of the Moscow City Duma staff. The assistant was dismissed, but, according to the deputy, the Moscow City Duma staff was afraid that if a criminal case was opened against the deputy's assistant, the traces could lead to much larger frauds and high-ranking Moscow City Duma employees, so it was decided to apply to law enforcement authorities with a fraud claim against the deputy himself. On 22 October 2020, Oleg Sheremetyev was given four years of suspended sentence with deprivation of the right to hold public office for two years and the court also satisfied in full the civil claim, according to which Sheremetyev must return to the budget of 2,171,579 rubles, until compensation for the damage, the arrest imposed on his property remains in place. Earlier, the deputy was one of the initiators of a lawsuit to the Supreme Court challenging the presidential decree on scheduling a vote on constitutional amendments (the lawsuit was rejected) and also advocated for the resignation of Aleksei Shaposhnikov as head of the City Duma due to his concealment of millions of rubles in income and the closure of the political criminal "Moscow case".
