A Moscow resident, who was described by the Telegram channel "Ostorozhno Novosti" as a "jack of all trades." Meanwhile, Kommersant reported that he had worked as a painting assistant at a local car repair shop and occasionally advertised private services for minor flat repairs. However, after the death of his wife, he gave up his part-time work. Both sources agree that Vengryzhanovsky had previously worked as a machinist’s assistant. Kommersant also noted his heavy drinking, while "Beware of the News" mentioned that he had previously faced charges of causing grievous bodily harm.

On 15 November 2023, Vengryzhanovsky was detained for allegedly harassing residents while intoxicated. According to reports, he resisted arrest when the police arrived. The following day, he was sentenced to 10 days of detention under the administrative charge of petty hooliganism (Article 20.1 of the Code of Administrative Offences).

After his release from the special detention centre, "Ostorozhno Novosti" claimed that Vengryzhanovsky was immediately detained again in connection with a criminal case involving preparation for a terrorist attack. According to Kommersant, citing a source close to the investigation, while in detention, Vengryzhanovsky allegedly communicated with his handler from the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), discussing the details of a planned attack and payment. After his release, it is alleged that he went to a forest park in Moscow, where a bag of explosives had reportedly been left in a cache for him, followed by another cache on a Moscow street containing a detonator. He was allegedly apprehended at the second cache.

On 29 November 2023, Vengryzhanovsky was taken into custody. He was later charged with possession of explosives, attempted manufacture of explosives, and desertion, though details of the latter charge remain unclear. On 7 August 2024, he was sentenced to 14 years in a strict-regime penal colony.
