In April 2019, he was placed under house arrest on suspicion of involvement in the attack on police officers during a rally against the transfer of land to Chechnya on 27 March 2019. Pleaded guilty.
On 12 December, sentenced to four months in a penal colony. He was released the same month.
In February 2020, the appeal court upheld the sentence, Gagiyev challenged the decision in cassation and the case was returned to the appeal court.
