Biography

Rinat Idelbayev is a member of Hizb ut-Tahrir, an organisation banned and recognised as extremist in Russia. On 20 May 2011, after the initiation of a case of participation in the activities of a religious organisation, in respect of which a court has issued a legally enforceable decision to ban activities in connection with extremist activities, materials of the organisation, including those included in the Federal List of Extremist Materials, were seized from his home during a search. Rinat Idelbayev is a member of Hizb ut-Tahrir, an organisation banned and recognised as extremist in Russia. On 20 May 2011, after the initiation of a case of participation in the activities of a religious organisation, in respect of which a court has issued a legally enforceable decision to ban activities in connection with extremist activities, materials of the organisation, including those included in the Federal List of Extremist Materials, were seized from his home during a search. Idelbayev, as well as the other defendants in the case, was then charged with preparation for actions aimed at violent seizure of power and violent change of the constitutional order (after which he was taken into custody on 31 July 2012), as well as inducement and involvement of others in activities aimed at seizure of power and change of the order. Idelbayev was also charged with public calls for extremist activity for publishing a video calling not to participate in the presidential election (this charge was later dropped as the relevant actions were covered by other offences). On 21 November 2013, he was sentenced to six years' imprisonment in a strict regime penal colony. On 2 February 2015, the court of appeal reduced the sentence to five years. On 28 July 2017, Idelbayev was released from prison
