A native of North Ossetia and a journalist, he left Russia in 2021. In November 2022, Totrov was fined twice under the administrative article for discrediting the army (part 1 of Article 20.3.3 of the Administrative Code). He noted that there was "some information" suggesting that his statements, which argued that Ossetians had no connection to the "Russian world," were irritating the authorities. In the fall of 2023, the journalist was fined under the article for inciting hatred (Article 20.3.1 of the Administrative Code) due to a publication in which he described Russia as a "fascist state." The prosecution was triggered by an Instagram post about a passenger on a flight from Moscow to Vladikavkaz who was detained by authorities for reading a book in Ukrainian. On July 25, 2024, Totrov was added to the list of extremists and terrorists maintained by Rosfinmonitoring. A few days later, it was reported that he had been declared wanted.
