At the end of March 2023, Ostanin spoke about the pressure of the investigation and deteriorating health due to the conditions in SIZO-1 in Altai Krai, which he described as torture-like. He was kept for a long time in the punishment cell - a basement with a window covered with rubbish, without hot water or a sleeping place. The cell was once flooded with water, and he had to share it with rats, spiders and ants. In April, Ostanin told his fellow detainees that his medicines, personal hygiene items and books were taken away from him in the pre-trial detention centre. He was repeatedly denied medication, which caused his health to deteriorate.
On 24 July 2023, Ostanin was sentenced to nine years in a general regime colony.
On 1 August 2024, he was released as part of a prisoner exchange between the Russian Federation and other states.
