Biography
Shtepa is the editor-in-chief of the magazine "Region.Expert" and columnist for "Radio Liberty". He left Russia in 2015 after threats from law enforcement and comments by the then-head of Karelia, Aleksandr Hudilainen, who said that Shtepa 'would have no freedom' in Karelia.
In 2024, the journalist was fined 5,000 rubles (about US$65) under an administrative protocol for participation in an “undesirable organisation” (Article 20.33 of the Administrative Code). The protocol was based on his appearance at a press conference for the "Forum of Free Peoples of Post-Russia" — an organization that has been declared "undesirable" in spring 2023.
