At the end of March 2010, a case of incitement to hatred on religious grounds was initiated; a preventive measure in the form of a recognizance not to leave; the trial began on 20 January 2012; the seized materials were sent for expert examination several times: according to Yakupov's defence, the first expert examination, carried out by the Russian Islamic University in Ufa, "was illiterate and rejected even by the investigation"; another expert opinion was prepared by the Ural State University, whose specialists did not see any signs of extremism in the materials studied. Another expert report was prepared by the Ural State University, whose specialists did not see any signs of extremism in the materials studied; the next expert report - by the Ural Regional Centre for Forensic Expertise of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation, dated 14 October 2011 - also reported that there were no signs of extremism; finally, the investigation received a report by Svetlana Mochalova, a criminalistics expert from the Criminalistics Laboratory of the Expert Department of the FSB in the Sverdlovsk region, which stated that one of the books seized from Yakupov (the expert did not consider the others) was aimed at inciting hatred: in particular, Mochalova found the statement "there is no God but Allah" dangerous; on April 28, 2012, Yakupov was sentenced to a fine of 150,000 rubles, but was released from execution of the sentence due to the expiration of the statute of limitations.
