In October 2021, law enforcement officers in Nikolaevsk-on-Amur searched the homes of Jehovah's Witnesses, who were accused of extremism because of their religion. Markov was placed in a temporary detention cell for two days. He was charged with participation in the activities of an extremist organisation. The court refused to place Markov in custody, after which the investigator had him sign recognizance not to leave. The court refused to place Markov in custody, after which the investigator had him sign recognizance not to leave. The prosecutor appealed the court decision, and Markov was elected a preventive measure in the form of a ban on certain actions on 1 November. From the beginning of 2023, for a year and seven months the court considered the case of four residents of Nikolaevsk-on-Amur, Markov was one of the defendants. On 30 July 2024, the court ruled to separate Markov's case into a separate proceeding, and sentenced the other three defendants to suspended sentences.
